“Reflections from the Garden Poet’s Corner”

A CD of original poetry woven from the tapestry of the garden and all profits are donated to the future Hartford Botanical Garden. When completed, the Hartford Botanical Garden will become another valuable community resource where natural beauty, education, and an appreciation of Hartford’s heritage can be appreciated.

Available exclusively at the CT Creative Store in Hartford

Tip

Pruning

For best results prune summer flowering shrubs like PG Hydrangea, Summersweet and Butterfly Bush in early spring just as the leaf buds break open. Prune spring flowering shrubs like Forsythia, Lilac, Azalea and Rhododendron from post bloom until the first day of summer. Pines are pruned during the "candlestick" (new growth elongated but not open) stage and other evergreens from mid May through early July. And don't forget to keep your tools sharp!

Unfinished Business
By Eileen Slightly

In the garden, as in life
The work’s never done.
The chores grow eternal
‘neath the warmth of the sun.

It’s got to be neat;
The weeds need a pull
The season is waning
The glass becomes full.

But what is important?
What matters the most?
To fill a life living,
Or to live a life full?

As sound as is goodness,
The soil, the sun.
We’re praised for things finished;
But judged,…(and you can’t beat this with a stick)...Judged by what’s undone.
